Who We Hire at Koepke Law, Ltd.

Everything Is About the Client. The Client Is Everything.

Outstanding candidates are always encouraged to send cover letters and resumes to our Firm. We continually seek outstanding attorneys, legal assistants and other professionals.

To all potential candidates, our Firm lives by this rule: Everything is about the client; the client is everything.

Candidates must have strong academic credentials based on their schools and academic records. However, these credentials are not enough. Unlike many law firms, we don't fixate on academics alone. Good students don't necessarily make really good lawyers.

We require excellence in writing and speaking. We demand that our professionals write clearly and persuasively. Verbosity and legal jargon have no place here. Effective communication means sensitivity to the audience. It is the lawyer's job to tailor communications to the needs of the particular client or judge, not the other way around.

We require good judgment. Good judgment is a function of many things, including, broad knowledge of the world. Our clients don't like working with overly specialized, egg-heads because, among other things, they lack good judgment. The egg-heads tend to give legal advice that is publishable in professional journals but is worthless in the real world of our clients. We want professionals who have worked outside of the law, who have managed and led others, who have traveled, who have broad knowledge of business, science, history, geography, literature and who regularly read newspapers and are informed about the major events affecting our clients. Some of our best hires have, in their other lives, managed restaurants, worked on dairy farms, ran title companies, and were professional ski instructors.

We require intellectual agility. That means the ability and the confidence of learning new skills, learning new areas of law, shifting strategies and tactics as needed, and juggling many projects and clients at the same time. We do not employ document drafters or researchers. Our lawyers must have the whole package: the ability to lead our clients in developing strategy, the skills to execute the tactics such as drafting legal papers, the skills to make convincing oral arguments in court as well as strong negotiation skills.

Strong people skills are also a must. Our clients want confident, decisive professionals, not blowhards with big egos. We don't want the blowhards either; they don't work well with others and they undermine teamwork. And we don't want our professionals blabbing to our clients or staff about how great they are: the quality of their services should speak for itself. Our clients also want professionals that deal well with the inherent stresses of serving our clients. That means keeping our cools as professionals and having a sense of humor.

Koepke Law would be a miserable place to work for professionals who do not seek out and embrace new projects; who struggle with charging forward, who have a feeling of entitlement just because they have a law license or law degree, who disrespect support staff, who procrastinate, who are more comfortable with doing the same thing everyday rather than embracing new challenges, who are more in love with the process of the law rather than results for our clients, who are quick to deflect responsibility to their colleagues rather than take ownership, and who do not willingly read statutes and articles outside of the office to better perfect their craft.

Our interview process is shaped to specifically assess these qualities. As a candidate, you will be interviewed by our attorneys, paralegals and business personnel. We must know how you well you interact with a wide range of people, not just the boss.

How We Charge For Our Services

Fees must be fair to the client and our law firm. Fair means several things:

  • Competitive Rates: Our hourly rates are competitive with other law firms that provide similar services;
  • Predictable: Our fees are reasonably predictable because we provide our client with a game-plan of the work to be provided with the likely fees that typically result;
  • Communication: We promptly consult with our clients when circumstances change that may require more work or different work that will require additional fees;
  • We Pay for Our Own Education: We don't charge for general research or "attorney education" to bring our attorneys up to speed on legal fundamentals. One of the reasons we hold true to this policy is that we rarely hire lawyers directly out of law school as many of our competitors do;
  • Efficient Staffing: We staff projects as thinly as possible to maximize efficiency;
  • No Over-Lawyering: We don't over-lawyer; we are paid to make judgments about the proper level of diligence given the client's budget and priorities; and
  • Flexibility: We are flexible in our fee arrangements and will use project fees rather than hourly fees where appropriate.
